How to Remember What You Study
Time spent studying and information retained are not the same thing. Here's what actually determines the second one.

You can sit with a textbook open for three hours and remember almost none of it a week later. That's not unusual, and it's not about effort — it's about what you actually did with those three hours. Reading is not the same activity as remembering, and most study time gets spent on the former while students expect the results of the latter.
Why highlighting and rereading feel productive but aren't
Highlighting a sentence and rereading it both create a sense of familiarity — the material starts to feel known. But familiarity is a weak predictor of whether you can produce that information later without the text in front of you, which is what an exam actually requires. If your revision routine is mostly highlighting and rereading, you're optimising for a feeling of readiness rather than actual readiness.
The two techniques that actually move the needle
Two ideas do most of the real work in making studying stick, and they're covered in full elsewhere on this site: testing yourself instead of rereading (active recall), and reviewing material again just as you're starting to forget it rather than once and never again (spaced repetition). Everything below is about making those two ideas easier to actually apply.
Chunk information instead of memorising it as a list
A list of twelve unrelated facts is hard to hold in memory. The same twelve facts, grouped into three related clusters of four, is much easier — you're remembering three ideas, each with structure, instead of twelve isolated points. When you're studying something that looks like a long list (causes of a historical event, features of a biological process, factors affecting something in Economics), look for the natural groupings before you try to memorise it as a flat list.
Explain it in your own words, out loud if possible
If you can only repeat a definition exactly as it's written in your notes, you probably don't fully understand it yet — you've memorised the wording, not the idea. Try explaining a topic as if to a JHS 1 student who's never heard of it. Where you stumble, hedge, or fall back on jargon is exactly where your understanding is thinner than it feels.
Write your own examples
Instead of only re-reading the textbook's example of a concept, come up with your own — a different Maths problem using the same method, a different real-world case for an Economics concept. If you can generate a new example, you understand the underlying idea, not just the one instance you were shown.
Connect new material to what you already know
Isolated facts are harder to recall than facts linked to something already familiar. When you meet a new topic, actively look for a connection to something you've already studied — a similar formula, a related historical period, a comparable process in a different subject. The connection itself becomes a retrieval cue: remembering the familiar thing helps pull up the new thing attached to it.
Sleep and breaks aren't optional extras
Cramming through fatigue, or skipping sleep to fit in more hours, tends to reduce how much of that time actually converts into memory — your brain does a real part of the work of consolidating what you learned during sleep, not just during the study session itself. A shorter, focused session followed by proper rest usually beats a longer session run on exhaustion.
